The Electrostatic Precipitator: Application and Concepts

An electrostatic Precipitator is essentially a filtration device that helps to get rid of fine particles such as dust and smoke. This is done via induced electrostatic charge. This hampers the flow of gases.  The use of an electrostatic precipitator is usually done for air pollution control. It also helps to remove different particles from waste gases at power generating stations and industrial facilities.

Mentioned below are some of the applications of electrostatic precipitators:

        The most widespread application of Electrostatic precipitator is for a smoke. It looks akin to a gas; but, it basically comprises a collection of hard elements that are floating in the atmosphere. All these elements can be easily excited, removed so these are huge commercial precipitators.

        The dry electrostatic precipitators can also be used to gather dry particles such as ash, cement, etc.

        The wet electrostatic precipitators can be used to get rid of wet particles such as tar, oil, acid, resin, etc.

        Electrostatic Precipitators are also used in steam plants in order to get rid of the dust arising from the flue gases.

        Electrostatic Precipitators are put in machine shops as well as chemical plants to eliminate acid as well as oil mists.

        They are also used to clean the  metallurgical heating system gases or blast

        In the medical field, electrostatic precipitators are used to do away with the bacteria and fungus from the air.

        Electrostatic Precipitators are also used in the air conditioning systems to sanitize the air

        They even recover different materials during the flow of gas

        Electrostatic Precipitators are used in the zirconium sand for getting rid of the rutile in plants such as rutile and dry mills

 

So, these are some of the applications of electrostatic precipitators. They have wide usage in current times in so many different sectors such as railways, cement plants, etc.  The only drawback with electrostatic precipitators is that they are very expensive. They can only be used for big projects. Also, they require a huge amount of space for setting up. As a matter of fact, they are not as effective in collecting gaseous pollutants. But they help remove dry and wet impurities easily.
